Happy (You Must Believe in) Spring Concerts and Update
Good morning folks!
Happy St. Brigid's week! And happy Spring!
And so we turn the page on the first month of 2025! I hope it has been kind to you. I wish you all the courage and creativity of Brigid for the months ahead!
A few of my dreams, schemes and seeds are budding ... and so: to the perennials (at the risk of extending the metaphor!!)
You Must Believe in Spring!
this concert that I developed many years ago and inspired my first album! It's energising and a joy to return to this music each year .. just as nature does, and to bring you the familiar favourites as well some new ones with you. There are 2 events:
Sandymount Community Centre, Newbridge Avenue, February 7 with Johnny Taylor, piano and Barry Donohue, double bass. Fully accessible venue. This concert is supported by Dublin City Council and so it is Free. Just come along. This will be one of only a few concerts now with the brilliant Barry as he has moved to England. We're very sorry he's going ... but wish him all the very best with his new venture!!
Bewley's Cafe Theatre, Grafton St. February 21 with Johnny Taylor, piano, Scott Kohlmann, guitar and Derek Whyte bass. Fully accessible venue. I've known Scott for many years and but only in the last 2 have had the opportunity to sing with him. He's a beautiful player and brings a very beautiful quality to complement and support Johnny and Derek's playing .. Derek has been playing my Brazilian music with me and the swing, solidify and creativity he brings is very exciting. You'll just have to hear them! Tickets on eventbrite. Oh, and I'm really hoping to release a new single on that day ....
Jazz & Disability
Bursary to develop Solid, Space and Sound with the Project Arts Centre supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.
This is a real break! Over the year this bursary will support me to fully develop my Solid, Space and 'Sound with the Project Arts Centre and to engage disabled and blind people in an aesthetic, participatory multi-sensory creative experience of cultural spaces and art. I'm really looking forward to this as it supports me to build new collaborations in music, art and dance with other artists I greatly admire ... all while bringing more blind and disabled folks into the Arts in a more equitable way..
Jazz & Children (& Disability!)
This is a gorgeous tv program for kids about the adventures of a little visually impaired girl called Maddie and her dog Triggs. It is made by Irish creators and actors and the very talented little girl playing Maddie is also visually impaired... Lots of music and lots of fun! I was so excited to be asked to guest appear on one episode .. as "The Wind!" I believe the episodes launched today on RTE player so please keep an eye! Or more like an ear!
Lots of progress with Disabled Artists, Disabled Academics.. we've now a good working relationship with the Department of Arts and are very grateful for the previous Minister, Catherine Martin for getting the ball rolling on this -which has led to so much in 2024 ...
we campaigned for broadening the research on Basic Income to represent experiences of disabled artists and it's now underway
I advised and many disabled artists consulted on the Amplify: A Call for Transformative Action which took a detailed look at experiences of marginalised communities in the Arts with strong, practical, recommendations for change
Nationwide Accessibility survey
I spoke and performed at the NDA's annual conference which focused on Arts, Culture and Sport....
But this could get long! To see a full review of the year's DADA actions, please see here
Finally, this year I'm putting it out to the Universe for some admin support. Things like this, writing newsletters, answering emails, writing copy, social media etc . Especially with all the disability work, it's all gotten a bit big for one person! So if there is anyone out there who might have these skills and the time! and could perhaps take over some of this work, please let me know.
Thank you for all your support though 2024! Be well and look forward to seeing you through the year!
Warm regards
Emilie
