Emilie Conway Quartet Celebrates Double Bassist and Stalwart of Irish Jazz, Dave Fleming.

Double bassist Dave Fleming has been a stalwart of Irish jazz for over 40 years. His cultural & musical contribution, as much as his personal impact, of kindness, wisdom & wit, is immeasurable.

One of Ireland's true musical elders, through his career he has played with local & international luminaries including The Wad, Noel Kelehan, Louis Stewart, Jim Doherty, Lynne Arriale, Scott Hamilton, Spike Robinson, Harold Land, Warren Vache, Teddy Edwards, Bobby Shew, Art Farmer, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Billy Eckstine, Jimmy Witherspoon, Van Morrison, Mose Allison, the Tommy Halferty Quartet, Hugh Buckley Quartet, Van Morrison & The Chieftains and many, many more.

Emilie Conway started working with Dave over 15 years ago and his support musically & personally was instrumental in the production of first album the Secret of a Rose with Johnny Taylor on piano and Dominic Mullan on drums.

Now, In recognition of his contribution and his 70th Birthday, Emilie Conway & her musicians, Johnny Taylor & Dominic Mullan delight in paying tribute to & celebrating their great friend and colleague, Dave Fleming, in a concert that features him & the music he loves.

Jazz on a Summer’s Day

The title of today's programme reflects the famous film, "Jazz on a Summer's Day,' about the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival by Bert Stern and director Aram Avakian.  The film weaves stellar performances by jazz greats like Anita O’Day, Louis Armstrong, and Thelonious Monk with images of water, yachts, sun hats, an attentive audience (eating ice-creams!) and quieter more intimate rehearsal moments.  The music ranges from jazz standards like "Tea for Two," to blues to experimental.

Inspired by this film, we bring you our "Jazz on a Summer's Day," in music that sings the lightness and brightness of summer, with the sparkle of some well known standards as well as the twinkle of hidden gems.

Emilie Sings Billie is a perennial favourite and sells out every time. Emilie first created the show in 2009 and it has been supported by the Arts Council.

Dublin vocalist Emilie Conway – known for her thoughtful projects paying tribute to writer Maeve Brennan and composer Alex Wilder – is the special guest at guitarist Aengus Hackett's weekly JazzGate series, delving into the "Lady Day" songbook.

This is exactly what it felt like for me coming back to Alec's songs for this very special performance, particularly after all the lockdowns. Singing this music with my musicians was a delight and a homecoming.

It's also very important for me to acknowledge that my research of Alec's music and the subsequent album, Dear World, would not exist in the way that it does without Judy Bell, and the heart and the harmony of her encyclopedic knowledge and experience, of which she gave so generously.

I'd also like to thank Allen Smith, of Jazz on the Terrace, here in Ireland, for inspiring me to research Alec's music when he praised my version of I'll Be Around on my debut album, The Secret of a Rose! Subsequently, Jazz on the Terrace won an award from the Arts Council of Ireland to support a nationwide tour for us to perform the fruits of that research with Dear World: Emilie Conway Sings Alec Wilder.

Swing into Summer: A Fundraiser for Phil Ware

The Irish Jazz community was shocked to learn of the serious sudden illness of our own Phil Ware, pianist, teacher, bandleader, mentor and pivotal artist in our community. Phil’s playing is unforgettable and I remember well when I first heard it and immediately became an eager disciple of his Monday night trio gigs at JJ Smyths.
