Emilie Conway is an award winning jazz singer, composer and lyricist. Her music is informed and complemented by her love of literature, poetry, sound and silence. She blends her own compositions, spoken word / poetry, with improvised or composed music and her interpretation of familiar and less familiar jazz standards.
Working in a traditional jazz setting - piano/guitar, bass, drums with some of Ireland's leading jazz musicians: her long-standing quartet comprises of Johnny Taylor, piano, Damian Evans/Barry Donohue/Dave Fleming, bass and Dominic Mullan, drums. She also works in more minimal settings; duo with double bass/tabla. She sings in many languages, French, Irish, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese. Special concentration on Brazilian Portuguese and music from Brazil.
Her work centres around three areas of focus: jazz and art/literature, jazz and disability and jazz and children. Emilie was awarded a commission with the National Gallery to respond to the recent exhibition of the legendary modern artist, Piet Mondrian, of which she is in the final stages of music production. She is also working on a commission from the Project Arts Centre to respond to their new policy: Towards Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. During lockdown Emilie produced a music video in collaboration with children St. Colmcille's Senior School called It All Works Out around her own experience of growing up with a disability. This music video was launched as part of Cruinniu na nOg festival, 2020.
As an artist, Emilie’s practice is broad, taking in many expressions of art: singing, painting, writing and dancing. An accredited art psychotherapist, she also believes in the healing power of art and creative expression.
