I’ve never heard of this - what is Safe to Create?
Safe to Create is a Dignity at Work programme looking to impact change on the culture and practices of the Arts and Creative sectors. It is managed by Irish Theatre Institute, on behalf of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and in partnership with the Arts Council, Screen Ireland and Minding Creative Minds.
As part of this programme we have developed a Code of Behaviour, training, and counselling supports for artists and arts workers and many other resources.
In this workshop you will learn about Safe to Create and how it can support you to work in a safe and respectful creative environment. Your experiences and feedback working or trying to get work in the arts sector is very welcome.
Safe to Create is for everyone, artists, arts workers, and freelancers, at all career stages and across disciplines. See website here for more info. We each play an important part in ensuring the success of the Safe to Create initiative.
The Safe to Create Code of Behaviour will also soon to be a special condition of Arts Council and Screen Ireland Funding.
Access, inclusion, participation and contribution to Arts and Culture is a human right. We are committed to doing our best/better, we are listening, and we are learning. We probably don't always get it right. We welcome your feedback on what we're doing well and what we can improve on.
I can’t attend this workshop, but I’m interested in Safe to Create!

Safe to Create - Next Steps
In response to recommendation 5 in the SPEAK UP: A Call for Change Report, Safe to Create plans new research in 2023. The development of the next stage of research will include an examination of the intersectionality of ethnicity, disability, sexuality and their influences of harm within and across Ireland’s arts sector. This next phase will begin by consulting with key stakeholder groups. These meetings are planned for March, April and May – we will be reaching out again closer to the time, so watch this space.
If you need anything or have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to give me a ring.
Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our upcoming workshops!
Best,
Niamh
